Growing old in Bulgaria
News about Gergana
Dear friends, last week we got Gergana’s sample results. Fortunately, no malignant tumors were found! We are copying part of the long text of the results:
“Inflammation of the tissue which is forming fibrous polyps with sebaceous gland hyperplasia and epidermal hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis.
– moderately inflamed ear polyps
– moderate malassecia infection
In the locations examined, no signs of malignant tumor growth could be found.”
So, shortly and understandably said – Gergana has ear polyps, inflammation and malassecia which is a type of fungi infection. The dog feels itching, pain and deep discomfort and she definitely needs surgery… We took Gergana for another exam and possible surgery, but it was determined her indexes were not good for anesthesia. For now Gergana is on antibiotic treatment and external treatment of the ears.
News about Gergana
The vets took samples from Gergana’s ear tumors and it will be sent to Germany for hystology. We are expecting to have results in about 10 days. We will update you with news (hopefully good one!) as soon as we get it!
News about Gergana
So… Despite this dog’s problems are so many and our possibilities to help her are to their ends, nevertheless we keep acting slowly, as much as we can.
What we managed to do so far – the standard 4D SNAP test which showed positive results for Dirofilaria. X-ray of the lungs in order to determine if there are metastases – there are not. And surgery for removing the breast tumors. The surgery went well, but Gergana’s problems do not end here, not at all. It turned out that she has formations in both her ears which also are tumors… Added to her advanced age are the Dirofilaria, and now this problem! Because it’s not clear if the tumors are non-malignant, there are a few options – to go directly to surgery, it’s a procedure called “ablation” (which is complicated and requires removing the whole hearing channel); or the more reasonable option – to first take a sample from the formation in order to see it it’s benign or not, and then make the decisions.
The normal cost for ablation of just one ear is about 300 EUR; for us it would be about 350 EUR for both ears. Histology made in Bulgaria by human doctors, would cost about 25 EUR, and the options for more qualitative valuation (which our vets recommend) is in Greece (75 EUR) and Germany (100 EUR).
Right now Gergana is recovering after the surgery. She has drainage which we are supposed to remove tomorrow; she is on painkillers and Doxycycline as a pre-therapy for the Dirofilaria. Just till now the sum we owe is 202 EUR – 50 from them already covered by Raya Petrova, 25 covered by Gergana Naidenova and 100 EUR by Gergana Georgieva; the antibiotics are not included in that amount. We need funds to cover the rest of the bill, for sample, eventually for surgeries in the near future and for Dirofilaria treatment. You can make a rough calculation for yourselves… Our possibilities end here. No matter how serious and hard the situation is, we cannot take any further steps for surgeries, samples, treating for Gergana. Because after the last evaluation of the amount we owe to the clinic for unpaid bills, we have no more options to make new bills before paying the ones we already have.
Whatever Gergana chances are from now on, her future is in your hands! If you wish to help her with whatever amount possible for you, please write her name as a subject of donation so that we can account the money correctly and on purpose. Every donation will be written here by name and amount donated, so that you could all follow how the fundraising goes.
Today we will tell you about Gergana. Gergana is just a dog. But she is a typical example of the fates of thousands of animals. The way our country “takes care” of our grey grandparents is the same way thousands of people “take care” of their “pets”. It’s a pity, it’s sad, it’s ugly.
Gergana is an old friend of ours, for about 4 years now. We have been passing near the yard where she was chained hundreds of times and our hearts always filled with sorrow. Can you imagine what it would be like to spend your whole life without knowing anything else but 2 square meters, a hateful chain, two rusty pots and the tree you are chained to? Oh, let’s not forget the kennel with the rotten floor. This was Gergana’s life, in heat and cold. She used to see people and animals passing by the distant fence, the second prison for her soul, and dreamt of what was lying a few meters away from her. The precious unknown THERE, smelling of thyme and freedom. Yes, there were some years when she used to see people a couple of times a week, but the last two years those meetings grew really rare and the noise in the yard disappeared. Someone had passed away, they said. And then a good human went to feed her a few times a week. And she ate and slept on the bare ground, in loneliness. Punished, guilty without guilt. Imagine this, just try to imagine. The years that creature lost.
We had tried to take Gergana many times with any kind of arrangements, but that never happened. She was doomed to guard a deserted yard. Until she got sick and became more of a burden, than of use. And she wasn’t even a burden because nobody would have bothered to provide any medical care for her but why should she darken the days and conscious of a responsible owner. And one day they just brought her to us. Thin, with tumors hanging down from her breasts.
Gergana is now under our care. She is eating and she’s vital, but we have no idea what her health status is. Tomorrow she will be thoroughly examined in the clinic and we will know more. We hope she doesn’t have metastases and could go through a surgery. We strongly ask for your support and help for that poor creature, because Gergana truly deserves to see something good from this world, be it in the sundown of her life…
Gergana is just another yard dog, seen nothing good from the world for her 11 years of living. Unfortunately, she is a representative sample not only of those chained in yards, but also of thousands others having lived in home conditions. Because you have no idea how many people contact us asking to take over their already old and sick dogs that are about to be left in a shelter… They are no longer small, cute, fluffy, don’t fill them with tenderness and joy, they have their health problems just like humans do. They no longer run on the walks or play fetch with a stick or a ball; they just lay their white mouth over their tired paws and ask for nothing more but the warmness and comfort of your home and heart. But this is not enough, not at all. And what does this speak for us, humans… You can answer that question yourselves.
