Bucky, who broke my heart
I just fed, gave meds and left from this creature with ill heart and yet I am the one who is sitting here and gathering the pieces of her broken heart in pathetic attempts to put in one piece again. This heart is supposed to become long ago hardened but there goes a month or two of rare moments of wild happiness and common moments of difficulties and pain and there comes somebody who doesn’t just crawl but run towards your love. Somebody who seems somehow special to you. Someone underprivileged, miserable, doomed. Someone like Bucky.
I stand in my work place, doing my job, a day like any other. The phone rings one more time, I can’t pick it up every time… This time I could. One more case of another domestic dog. And to tell you before I forget, because it is so so important – he’s a purebred Belgian shepherd… Bought as a pup, but now 6 months old. Taken to be raised as a warehouse guard. Regularly dewormed and deflead, vaccinated. Well, cared for, you know… But, you see, that 6 months old Belgian shepherd weighs just 8 kg and is barely 35 cm to the shoulder; thin with huge belly. He went to the vet; after all the investment must be protected. The diagnosis – accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity. The cause – liver, heart, kidneys or whatever. The prognosis – maximum 1 month of life.
And suddenly there was no more space for this dog in the warehouse and no more length on the chain for him. There is no place for sick dogs. But because his owner is a kind and merciful person, as he called himself, he couldn’t leave him in the streets. He called the person who bought Bucky from. He stalled him. He was also offered to leave him in the public shelter. But he heard for us from a friend of a friend of a friend and one of those friends called me. The whole story, especially told by a third, fourth or fifth person seemed to me very unclear so I decided to go on place and check for myself and talk to Bucky’s “human”.
I went to the warehouse on the next day. After talks from which it became clear that Bucky won’t be a domestic dog anymore but will become our nobody’s sick dog, I came close to the small low enclosure made of pallets in the middle of which a kennel was standing. Without even waiting to call him, a pup ran clumsily across the place and to the end of the enclosure which was as high as the top of his head. He stood up on his hind legs, leaned on the fence with front paws, and looked at me. And then and there I died and was born again. Besides the huge tummy swelling amongst sticking bones, all I saw was bulging cheek bones and warm brown eyes. And, oh God or whatever you are – what eyes… That creature approached me with such trust and just stared at me. With his resigned sad look. So calm, so unquestioning, so begging for nothing. I felt as if he was waiting for me to make the first step. I leaned down to him, thinking to talk to him a little. And he just put his head on my shoulder, standing maximally high on his back legs in order to reach me, and froze. He didn’t move an inch while I was caressing him, while I was talking to him and while my salty tears started falling down on his fur, without me even knowing when it happened. Only his tail was wagging left and right, timidly expressing satisfaction and gratitude. I forced myself to let go of that ball of tenderness with huge efforts but I promised him to come back for him.
Well, enough with the drama. In essence… Bucky was thoroughly examined in vet clinic Animo by Dr Nikolov for a few hours. There are a few results and ultrasound measurements we are still waiting for but what we can say so far – yes, Bucky has ascites (accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity) and the heart is the problem. He has congenital heart defect for which we cannot do much. The symptoms are complex but they are the reason for him not gaining weight, not developing well and for his stomach to be so swollen. We started a therapy for relieving his condition. There is a chance his problem almost disappear with growth and time and therapy but for now – Bucky can die any minute or he can live for years.
From now on the important thing is not how long Bucky will live but how he will live. The important thing is if there is a place for sick dogs in our mercantile world. If in Buky’s world we will find someone who doesn’t care how purebred Belgian shepherd Bucky is. Who doesn’t care what kind of guard he will be. Who doesn’t care how much joy Buck will give him, but how much joy he will give Bucky. Is there a human like this in Bucky’s world, in our world? A human devoid of all egoism?
We will keep you informed about Bucky’s results and condition. And meanwhile everybody is welcome to offer him at least nice foster home. He deserves to feel warm, calm and loved.
I am sitting here and writing those lines and tears fall down my face and my heart bleeds. My heart. And there, in the darkness, an ill heart lies. A brave, ill heart, wanting and begging for nothing…

News about Bucky
Dear friends, a lot of things happened after we told you Bucky’s story, and we didn’t have the time to tell you about all of it. And to be honest, we were waiting to see if we were going to tell it with tears of joy or with tears of sorrow…
After detailed tests and examinations and consulting specialists abroad, it turned out our boy’s condition could be surgically intervened! We will try to explain it with simple words, the way we understood it because there is too much terminology and besides – his case is unique. After detailed ultrasound exams, it was determined that the heart problem Bucky head was stenosis. It means narrowing of the heart valve. As a result the blood cannot circulate the way it should and it comes back which gradually led to the ascites in Bucky’s case – accumulating of fluid into the peritoneal cavity. With time the organs got damaged and death comes sooner or later if no measurements are taken. After many consultations and discussion, it turned out Bucky could go to surgery! Of course, everything held risks in his condition but not that we had much of a choice… If seeing him drooping and dying in front of our eyes can be called a choice at all… It turned out that there are only 5 other surgeries like that in the world! But they were done to dogs older than 1 year and heavier than 30 kg. And our fragile boy’s condition with his 6 months of age and 7.5 kg of weight had no base for comparison in the world… You now understand why we call him really unique. Our doctor, Stoyan Nikolov, and the doctors from Central Veterinary Clinic – Sofia discussed the case directly with the specialist who made the other 5 surgeries. We are infinitely grateful to the whole team for the efforts and all they did for Bucky!
Well, the surgery was successful and the little hero behaved really heroically! His heart problem cannot be completely erased but he was put into a condition which is not so bad and with which he can live for years. As he probably will and we wish him that with all our hearts! Dogs with such diagnosis, as the present condition of Bucky, live for years without problems. The doctors pointed us a few cases as a proof. But right now Bucky is still recovering and because his case is truly unique and he needs monitoring because of the changes in his organism, he goes on a check-up in the clinic every week. Right now he is still on meds, that must be given to him twice a day but unfortunately we can do it only once on 24 hours…
This is our first request to you – we need foster home for Bucky where he will be able to get the pill once in every 12 hours; at least for a few weeks until some time after the surgery passes. We provide food and all necessary.
And our second request – help us pay Bucky’s surgery… We want to express our huge gratitude to Central Veterinary Clinic – Sofia, who charged us only with the materials and on incredibly low prices. The prices for such invasive heart surgeries of that class start from 1000 EUR and we need to pay only 300 EUR for Bucky’s! It is a small cost for the life of this precious dog, but money is money and we need to pay the costs for the procedure…
How you can donate:
Please, right as a subject of donation – for Bucky, so that we can account the money correctly and on purpose.
Our boy’s bill is much bigger but this is the amount we need to pay urgently to the clinic in Sofia. So there is no such thing as a small help…
If you wish and can foster Bucky, even for a little while, please contact us!
